Community Update #1
Community Update #1

We have a few updates to bring you this weekend, starting with an update on the status of our migration project and a few bits on next steps and things to look out for as we prepare for our migration. We will continue to bring you updates as and when we have them for you.

-WNxPhoenix and WNxSwitchBlade

The Updates
The Website

Click the image to open in full size.

One of the most pressing issues for those of you currently frequenting Community Discussion is the progress of the website update/forum migration which is currently in the works.

Several pages of database information, error logs and lots of other technical information which I couldn't possibly explain properly has been sent over to IPB (our chosen forum software provider) to assess what is going wrong with the migration tool WhiteWolf has been using. Their engineers have now been given access to our server to assess what's going wrong and why with the goal of providing WhiteWolf with a migration tool that will work for our community.

Once this is received by WhiteWolf the three of us will schedule time in ASAP to get this migration on the way.

I promise all of you that there is progress. I'm sorry that you're not seeing it yet and that some of you are feeling strung-along by the entire process. However, there is no way that I would be here writing this thread and stating that progress is being made if I did not believe it myself.

We will get there, and soon.

In the mean time...
The lack of a new website does not mean, however, that nothing is going on. We are now in a position to start properly preparing our forum for the migration. There are changes we can make to the forum before migration day that'll make the post-migration period much easier for everyone and will allow us to hit the ground running and working on new additions to our website/forum, rather than fixing some of the old things. Migration day will involve taking an up to date copy of the website and migrating that, so changes made now will be reflected on the new site.

Pre-Migration Changes

Over the coming days and weeks you are likely to begin noticing changes around the forum as we begin to plan and test how parts of WN will either look or operate once our IPB site is ready to be enjoyed. Some of the changes you may start to see include:

Forum Changes
You will be likely to see changes to our current forum arrangement including name changes, position changes, removal of certain forums and so on...

A reduction in the number of sections currently supported by WN.
This is one of the more unfortunate consequences of our current situation and restructuring. WN has many inactive or dead sections that house only a very small number of active members. These are sections that we do not have, nor do we expect to have in the foreseeable future, resources to fix. As such the decision will be made to archive these sections. Please note that we expect this to only affect a small number of active members.

Development of a new rank structure.
Work is currently underway to make WN a lot more simple to understand and a large part of this is further work on our structure - a project that will have 'does what it says on the tin' very much at the forefront of the changes.

At this point I can say that from Chief Officer to regular member there will now only be five layers of 'rank' within the community (with specialisations). Two administrative, two leadership/departmental officer, and the general membership. Ranks will be renamed almost across the board and the new names will reflect where that person belongs and, hopefully, give new and old members a pretty good idea of what they do without needing a handbook!

The most obvious changes will be to the rank names, tags and colours. Further updates will be posted as these changes are made.

Changes to our Laws
WN's current laws page and the laws themselves is looking rather tired and outdated. WN has operated a Laws system for many years now to varying degrees of success and flexibility. Our Laws will be replaced by a Code of Conduct in the near future, which will adapt and change as Warrior Nation does and be very much a living part of our Community moving forwards. The CoC will go into more detail about what types of behaviour and actions we do not condone and will also give more information than is currently available about the punishments for violating the rules of WN will be.

There are likely to be further changes in addition to the above as we progress with our plans to set WN up in such a way that it can be successful once again moving forwards. Again, further updates will be posted if this is to be the case.

A Note on Development...
Click the image to open in full size.

The decision has been made to lift the freeze on bringing new games into WN and the recruitment of new Engineers. However, these are subject to conditions as outlined below:

Entry of New Games
Not every game will be approved for WN. Priority will be given to AAA titles over any other. Non-AAA titles will be subject to approval from the Operations team. We also cannot guarantee that Development Support will be available for these games. Those games that are approved must meet the following two conditions before they will be given a forum and a game selector:
  • 10 newly recruited members signed up as Primary within the Workshop
  • At least one member must have applied for Game Champion
*AAA titles will bypass these requirements.

Recruitment of Engineers
For the foreseeable future will only be recruiting new Engineers that are able to support the AAA titles that WN will be focusing on in the near future. NOTE: This is likely to include larger titles that are already in WN but require intensive support.

If you want to get involved in building successful sections for these games or providing assistance to those that we have, we would welcome an application from you.

Further information on all of the above will be provided as and when elements go live or updates are available.

If you wish to discuss any of the above and what it may mean for you, your section or WN, please feel free to talk to WNxSwitchBlade or myself on Discord or PM us.

I'm looking forward to the changes. Hopefully the new recruits we bring in won't turn a blind eye to the new site other than the current outdated site of the past.

Please have the ability in the new site for a Graphics Head to upload banners and icons. I would like to skip the middle man/woman and do it myself it helps when things need to be done quickly. Even though you all have been responsive just it feels right that this could a possibility imho.

I just want to say few things if you do not mind. Forums changes look forward to it. If we were not allowed to start with the amount we had which I think it was 3-5 we would not have an active section. I think strict requirements at first will damper things.

In the short term to encourage growth perhaps allow 5 to start instead of 10, with the proviso that the section is actively recruited into up to 10 or more over the following month? At the end of the day I'd rather play a game with 5 friends than 10 random newbies recruited just to boost numbers in the short term. Just a thought.

A quick question regarding rank: Is it possible to have a game rank and a department rank? For example I'm in GAT but very much a Private in terms of my primary game. With the extreme simplification of the rank system this may not be helpful any longer, but it would have helped me as a newbie in the current system at least.

I think whenever we start with 3-5 members we wouldn't have the assurance that the section will become a success. With 10 "active" members there is a better chance in succeeding. What's the point in such a huge community to have a section with just 5 active members? It's hard to actually call it a section in my opinion with a player base of nearly 5k (ofcourse, we just had around 200 actives/month lately)

With 10+ "active" members there is way more potential as a section to grow and stay strong.

Hmm, I'm curious whether this spring cleaning will kill the only sections keeping me in WN. Well, if it does, it's been fun. Nothing lasts forever.

One question, and I'm probably a total noob for asking: What are AAA titles?

AAA (video game industry) In the video game industry, AAA (pronounced "triple A") or Triple-A is a classification term used for games with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion. A title considered to be AAA is therefore expected to be a high quality game or to be among the year's bestsellers.

This looks like good stuff, especially the fact that you want to simplify ranks a bit more.

They're not always the best, and even with a high budget Indie games can still beat them.

Thanks for the update.

I am not in agreement of the recruitment of engineers. I believe you need to totally derank every member of Dev currently and then start fresh. You have some total tag hangers who do +1 copy and paste posts but have no real understanding of how to speak to people, communicate and plan change and deliver a standalone project.

Development isn't key at the moment due to change but I agree it should be open but not to just people who are willing to pay for AAA titles.

Food for thought.

Good luck to the new order. I can see a few cuts in line. +1 on what dadzilla said. Old members are going to struggle to find a place.

I do mean good luck, it's going to be difficult with whatever action that has to be taken

Thanks for the update. It's a shame to see sections will be cut though. It's not like they take up tons of resources or time from the people in the Administration. Oh well. Anything to make things more simple, I suppose.
