Platform: PC
Genre Catagory: FPS
Date of Release: November 2007
Publisher: Midway Games
Developer: Epic Games
Rating: A

Well, does this game really need an introduction? Unreal Tournament is the seventh game in the incredible Unreal series and the fourth in the Tournament sub series. With the release of the first Unreal, the developers had a lot of positive comments for the game which was way ahead of itís time. People only had one request, a good multiplayer mode. So in 1999, the first Unreal Tournament was available on the market. Unseen graphics for that time, fast-paced action, playing with your friends over the internet,Ö This game seemed to had it all at that time. It was named Game of the Year and with that title, a special edition was released as well. The original Unreal Tournament community is still very large with players from all over the world. Other games such as Unreal II and the two Championships games were released as well but none ever had the success of Unreal Tournament.

So the next logical step was Unreal Tournament 2003. People all over the world bought this game to get that magnificent UT experience once again. But the game wasnít even half what we had expected, a complete joke. Epic couldnít let their most lucrative series die however and Unreal Tournament 2004 was born. Basically the same as itís 2003 colleague but with a few nice additions such as vehicles but the most important part was : It was a finished game and didnít require tons of patches to make it playable. Unreal Tournament was reborn.

With Unreal Tournament, most people think that UT refers to the multiplayer aspect and that three refers to the single player part, being the successor of Unreal 1 and 2. Epic however, used this as a clever marketing tool. By naming it Unreal Tournament 3, they admit they have made mistakes with 2003. They consider UT:GOTY to be the first UT game, and 2004 is considered one game as well. 2003 was the beta for 2004. By admitting they have made mistakes, they show the customers that they wonít do the same for this game and therefore they greatly increase their number of buyers.

Unreal is known for itís fast-paced action and playable levels, meaning that you can hop through them dodging attacks and stuff. To increase the playability of the levels, Epic first build them in cubes and boxes without adding any render or texture. They tested each level in this ďcube modeĒ to guarantee maximum playability.

After that, the true Unreal Engine could get to work. The incredible new Unreal Engine 3 can support PhysX PPU and requires a DirectX 9 graphics card. By not making it a DirectX 10 game, they donít force you to buy Windows Vista.

With a new engine, also comes a new level Editor. As always, you can edit and make new levels as much as you like with the handy and simple Unreal Level Editor. Itís even been made easier with the new Kismet method. You donít need scripting anymore, you can just create scripts in a visual way. Itís like building a level in 3D paint.

But by far the most valuable improvement, is the AI. Not only to bots no longer run into walls like they have mental issues, they are capable of understanding even small voice orders.

Game modes

Unfortunately, not all game modes will make their return. Bombing Run, Double Domination and Assault are no longer present in UT3. However, this is compensated by the new game mode Unreal Warfare, known as conquest. With this game mode, the size of the maps has been increased drastically. These are the modes :

Deathmatch :
The ancestor of all FPS games. You can play 1vs1, everyone for himself or in teams. New maps are waiting for their debut but offcourse, the good old classics will be there as well.

Capture the flag : While this is a classic mode, the addition of the hoverboard and other vehicles make it by far more interesting. Remember though that you canít take the flag off the ground so you canít use it in flying or hovering vehicles.

Onslaught : The true fans know this one from UT2k4. Basically, you defend your base (called a PowerNode) and destroy the PowerCore of the others. Vehicles play a major role in this one so the maps are in general a lot bigger than with (team) Deathmatch.

Unreal Warfare : A new game mode with maps even bigger than those of Onslaught. Players have certain objectives. They have to capture as many bunkers as they can but they need the resources to maintain it. To do that, they have to mine Tarydium. The number of bunkers and the amount of Tarydium determine when you get your next vehicle.

If you want to win the tournament, you gotta have the right gear. A summary :

Impact Hammer
: After a leave of absence in UT2k3 and UT2k4, the Impact Hammer makes itís return, replacing the shield gun.

Dual Enforcers
: Once again, a classic from Unreal Tournament. These 2 pistols with incredible fire power replace the Assault Rifles from UT2k3 and UT2k4.

Canister Gun : A weapon with three fire modes. It combines the Grenade launcher, the mine layer and the Bio rifle from UT2k4 in one weapon. There is different ammo for each firing mode.

Click the image to open in full size.

Shock Rifle : As usual, a primary fire mode with a plasma ray and a secondary with a plasma ball. Once again, most effective when used in the shock combo : Shooting the Plasma Ball with the Plasma ray which leades to a massive explosion.

Link Gun : Most fans were disappointed with the new version in UT2k3 and UT2k4 so Epic has increased fire rate again. The secondary green beam which can link team mates to increase attack power is once again present. A new feature : you can repair PowerNodes in onslaught and Warfare with it.

Tarydium Stinger Minigun : This weapon from Unreal and Unreal Championship II will be replacing the original minigun. A dangerous choice since the minigun was one of the favourite weapons in all of Unreal.

Click the image to open in full size.

Flak Cannon : This weapon needs no explanation nor does it need improvement so it has been left untouched in all of itís glory. Fires metal shelves in primary and a ball of shelves which splatters apart when it hits something in secondary.

Rocket Launcher : Fires one, two or three missiles in primary. Like the !-ball in Unreal and UT, it fires a maximum of 3 nades in secondary. It can also shoot a spiral of missiles. Itís comparable with the one from UT2k4.

The anti-Vehicle Rocket Launcher is comparable with the one from UT2k4. The ideal vehicle destroyer with a guidance mode in secondary.

Click the image to open in full size.

Sniper Rifle : Fans from UT will know this one as a hard to handle but very effective weapon. Rumour has it, that there will be a trace to see the location of the player.

Translocator : A teleportation device. Shoot a disk on the floor with primary mode. Go kill some enemies (use primary and secondary together to go back to last weapon) and when youíre done, teleport back to that med kit with secondary fire mode.

Redeemer : You only get one bullet with this one, but one bullet can do far greater damage than 1000 rocket launchers. This nuclear weapon has a guidance mode in secondary and youíll need it to get the bomb as far away from you as possible.

Target Painter : Surprise ! You never know what this one does since it varies from level to level. One possibility is moving stone but thereíll be many surprises.

There will be Axon and Necris vehicles. All players will be equipped with a hoverboard for transportation in large maps. You can hold on to other vehicles to increase speed, you can even do tricks with it though thatís more for fun and vids than for winning a match though a loop might come in handy when being chased.

These are the Axon vehicles :

Scorpion : A one man buggy able to deploy twin blades if you want a head as souvenir. The vehicle can also blast bouncing balls which explode on contact and like that isnít enough, it can be used as a bomb as well to be send on a kamikaze mission.

Hellbender : Equipped with a skymine turret, kinda like the shock rifle. One combo however can detonate nearby combos. The second turret fires twin beams.

Manta : Mostly unchanged though it looks very different. This one-man hovering vehicle is still fast-paced and shoots rapid-fire energy shots. However, itís most dangerous weapon is his wings. By hovering over the ground, it can suck up enemies in the fans.

Click the image to open in full size.

Raptor :
Not much known about this one, though itís appearance has been modified as well, most likely.

Cicada :
Like most others, the vehicles returning from UT2k4 have been modified a lot yet not much is known about it. It looks a lot thougher, thatís all there is to say at the moment.

Paladin :
Itís getting old but itís been modified a lot visually. It hasnít lost his energy shield though so it is still the most effective defensive vehicle.

Fires a camera in the air, followed by a shot dropping a cluster bomb on the ground. A second player can man the Skymine turret such as in the Hellbender.

Click the image to open in full size.

Goliath :
This tank, you might know from the Enemy Territory : Quake Wars beta. Primary fire is a focused anti-vehicle shell, secondary is a wide spread, anti-personnel shell. The second player has a machine gun turret to have some fun.

Leviathan :
A mobile fortress with a devastating main cannon and incredible fire power with four turrets. Each of them equipped with an alternate shield function.
And the Necris Vehicles :

Viper :
Basically, itís the Necris version of the Scorpion. Only one addition : it can fly. Once again capable of going on a kamikaze mission.

Darkwalker :
A vehicle with legs, allowing it to reach out for terrain that nobody else has ever reached before. Twin lasers as primary and a secondary which screams players off their feet. Youíll see

Click the image to open in full size.

Fury :
A flying vehicle, specialized in shooting down air units. Ideal for dog fights thanks to itís barrel roll option.

Nemesis :
Equipped with a twin laser beam with zoom function. You can go for speed or for attack power by deciding to either crouch or stand up.

Scavenger :
Walk to reach unreachable terrain, or roll to engage in massive attacks. This baby can do it all.

Stealthbender :
Basically, the answer to the Hellbender. Four deployables and stealth-based. Spider Mine trap is known to be one of the deployables as well as slow volume, possibly a teleporter as well.

There are, as usual, several teams in the game. Old friends and new enemies, or all enemies, as you like.

Necris :
A race of Undead from the Original UT.

Nakhti :
Egyptians from UC2

Juggernauts :
Heavily armoured, genetically boosted figures from UT2k3 and UT2k4

Click the image to open in full size.

The Corrupt :
Robots under command of our friend Xan Kriegor, ex-winner of the Grand Tournament

Iron Guard :
Yet another favourite from the original. They say that these people are humans, though it depends what you call humanity.

Krall :
Skaarj slaves from the original game
Click the image to open in full size.

Jakobís Team :
Most likely, this will be marines, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

Twin Souls :
Nothing is known of this race and Epic wants to keep it that way, this is the surprise of the game in terms of races

Own team :
Like always, you could just build your own super duper team for pwnage all night long.

The game has incredible potential and for now it seems it's realising it. The unreal Engine provides incredible eye candy and the new features are the latest in the genre. They have added the good elements from the past and scratched the bad ones. This game is probably gonna be the best in the series with a combination from action as in Unreal Tournament and variation such as in UT2k4.

You mean the nasty bull look-a-likes ? Those are the kralls, slaves from the skaarj. Known from the original game though they have been modified a lot.

If you see one of them, you can bet money on it that it's Sgt. Splurg, part of the Elite Skrall force. The image where he and Crain, the kind of human guy, are facing eachother is most likely telling the final scene from the storyline but it hasn't been confirmed yet so I decided not to include it to prevent false info.

The images or not ingame screenshots. You can see that because there is no HUD (Heads Up Display) which is very present in Unreal games They do project what the game will look like though as they are made from a sort of animation created with the 3d models used ingame. It's kinda taken from a non-playable demo build by the Developers. If you compare this to the cinematics, you'll see a huge difference in quality.

NOOOOOOOOO. Do not put tracers on my beloved Sniper Rifle....

It's the one of only 2 guns that is a onehit kill when it hits the head of an enemy (actually, looking at the weapons list, might be THE ONLY gun that can pull off a headshot. What happened to the gun that shot sawblades?)
