Contestants traveled from as far as India, where 3 plans and 27 hours of travel were necessary to make it to the competition, and as close as Placentia, a mere 30 minutes from Internet PC Café, the finals location in Los Angeles. Country winners brought their girlfriends, mothers, aunts and brothers to see them compete and hopefully win the title of Halo for Windows Worldwide Championship. The day before the event saw players meeting and greeting for a night out on the town, and then a quick trip over to the Venue to practice on the computers for the competition.
On February 17th, the 19 finalist sat down at their competition machines, and set-up for the quarter-finals, knowing that there was a chance it all could end for them in the next 2 hours. Players were divided into 3 groups, and only 4 competitors from each group advanced to the Semi-Finals. Josh Hall from Australia and Sunny Oke Ching Siang from Singapore were the first to be eliminated. Next came Sam Cheikh-Saad from France and after a 1 on 1 tie breaker for the 4th spot that advanced Helmuth Melcher from Austria was eliminated. In the final pool, three players were eliminated; Juho Vainio from Finland, Nickunj Bansal from India (the youngest player at the competition), and Hong-Chi Jang from Taiwan.
The Semi Finals began, and both the spectators and the competitors were silent as the 4 matches were played to determine which eight players would advance to the finals. The first pool had 2 players battling it out for first, Noah Evans from the US and Jonathan Finglass from the UK. While they tied for first place, Alejandro Santacruz from Mexico and Dag Erik Jorgensen from Norway were eliminated. In the second pool, Teppei Terabe from Japan dominated the pool by winning 3 of the 4 matches. Unfortunately Nicolas Friedli Leon from Chile, and Henrique Santos Pinto de Souza from Brazil ended their quest for the title at this point.
After a quick break the top 8 players sat down to compete. All spectators were silent, while watching their favorite gamers compete. A total of 5 matches were played, and the results were different in each match. Ju Yong Shin, from Korea placed 6th in two matches, placed 1st in another. Anders Rudolfsson from Sweden, placed 2nd in 2 matches and 6th in two others. Teppei Terabe from Japan, varied from 2nd place to 8th. Noah Evans from the USA bounced from 2nd to 7th. The other 4 players stayed very steady in their placements. Both Jacob Grubbe Rasmussen from Denmark and Rick Sundberg from Ireland played their best , trading off on 7th and 8th place in each match. Stefan Dammers from The Netherlands, who had placed third in the Quarter and Semi Finals, pulled out all his tricks and placed from 2rd to 5th in all his Final Matches.
As the players sat waiting for the final results, only 1 player knew where he placed. Jonathan Finglass from the UK, had dominated the finals, placing 1st four out of five times. Chuck Blevans from Microsoft awarded all the players a certificate for their new ATI Radeon 9800 Video card. As all 19 players stood waiting, third place was announced and Ju Yong Shin from Korea stepped forward to accept his certificate for his new computer. Stefan Dammers face fell, as he new he was in the running for third place. Nobody knew who was second as the results from each match were so varied. As Chuck announced the 2nd place winner, Stefan Dammers from The Netherlands was amazed to hear his name called. His personal rooting section of his Aunt, Mother and Brother were even more excited than Stefan! There was no surprise as Jonathan Finglass from the UK was crowned the Halo for Windows Worldwide Champion, and all there agreed that he had earned the title. How long he keeps the title, we shall have to wait and see!
