Tabula Rasa

Platform: PC
Publisher: NCsoft
Developer: Destination Games
Expected release date: 02/15/2006

One Line Summary: A futuristic MMORPG that’s all about the fast paced action.

A while ago our Ironheart posted a fantastic, incredible, extraordinary preview about Tabula Rasa. He stated that Tabula Rasa would become a fantasy MMORPG with some unique features. Players would get a house from the beginning, characters could be saved in any moment of their progress and could be developed otherwise when the “back-up” was loaded and the graphics would be colourful. However he was wrong.

Yes my dear readers, you might wonder what Ironheart was drinking/smoking/… while he wrote this, however it is not entirely his fault. The publisher reviewed Tabula Rasa some time ago and decided that the game would not live up to their expectations (which are selling a lot of copies). So instead of shutting down the project it has been converted in a whole new game. They have converted their original concept into a new setting: the future. Instead of wandering through a colourful fantasy world, you will now inhabit a dark, futuristic battlefield called earth.

One day in the future our little planet is visited by The Bane, an alien race. And off course there goal is not of a pacific nature. The Bane are a powerful race whose speciality is the art of war. They’re much more advanced then the humans and though our armies fight back bravely it soon becomes clear that this is a battle we cannot win. But then another race is introduced: the Eloh. There race is as highly developed as the Bane, however they do not have the numbers to defeat The Bane. There only option is to pass their skills and knowledge onto the humans. No, they haven’t got the blueprints for some superprotoncannon but they do have Logos, a form of a magic. Reinforced with their new abilities the humans become a worthy opponent for the Bane and the battle for the earth is unleashed.

And off course you are a soldier in this gigantic battle, along with thousands of others. When your character next step is electing a class such as medic, commando, engineer … Very few is known of the classes though, it’s not even sure classes will be supported.
And then the real battle begins. The entire earth has been reshaped into on battlefield so you will start out in a military encampment where you can begin your first missions. Missions can vary from saving a captured patrol to killing the local leader of “The Bane”. And often you’ll need a team for it, they even implanted in game voice-chat to make communication easier.

The focus lies thus on PvE. And the development team has also concentrated on providing fast and interesting combat instead of spending hours on levelling your character. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to level: it’s also part of the game. Tabula Rasa tries to find the perfect combination between both. The combat will be in between a FPS game and a more traditional MMORPG. You won’t have to worry about aiming and headshots, it will be done for you. Your crosshair automatically locks on to a target and the damage dealt will be calculated based upon your skills, stance, … But you will still need to pull the trigger your self, retreat when needed, dodge incoming granates and use your magical skills on the right time.

One of the features the developers (luckily) decided to keep was the “character save” function. It allows the player to save and load its characters at any time. This means you can multiple characters that are identical. But you can make every character evolve in a totally different way. This will allow the player to explore every part of the game without having to start all over again.
The second feature they kept was the use of teleports to reduce travelling time. This lies in their vision to create Tabula Rasa as fast, accessible and fun possible.

Weapons have gotten special attention from the development team which explains the variety of weapons and the ways of using them. In Tabula Rasa you’ll see people blasting their energy guns, machineguns and pistols. But you’ll also see warriors wield lightsabers. Flame throwers will also be available. And there are many ways to use your weaponry. For example you can hold pistols in both hands but you can also hold one pistol and keep the other hand free for casting spells.

The dynamic world
Spread through the world of Tabula Rasa you can find many outposts, bases, teleports and towns. This may not sound spectacular or anything but the developers tried to approach this in a whole other way. In any other every NPC has its exact location and every enemy can be found in the same zone. But not in Tabula Rasa. They want to make the world dynamic and to make the player feel like his doings have an effect on the world. For instance: the Bane hold an outpost with an impressive force. But then a party of players goes out and conquers it for the humans. Now next time you visit the outpost you’ll find humans defending it against the Bane who struggle to get their outpost back.

The graphics have undergone an impressive change. Before they were colourful but now the world has changed dramatically. The environment looks apocalyptic because of it’s destruction by the Bane. This results in a grey and red world with few “flashy” colours.
The textures of the models look extremely sharp. Many previews that I’ve read praise Tabula Rasa for it’s graphics and since I’ve not seen any in game footage I’ll trust their word.

Tabula Rasa surely has made a remarkable metamorphosis. And to me it seems for the best. The old Tabula Rasa was original and would have been something new in the world of MMO games. But it wouldn’t have been fun and that’s what gaming is all about. The current game is all about fun and is much better adapted to the market of online games. It also has some interesting features that will most likely make this one of the top 2006 MMORPG’s.

Tabula Rasa remains an intriguing game that has taken an all-new form

The new graphics and new gameplay elements are looking pretty hot; we were pleasantly surprised.

Taurens make me horny
The game has definitely changed with the recent shift in emphasis by the developer. Whether that change was for good or ill is yet to be seen, but either way it looks interesting.

Excellent preview, as always
