AVG 8.0 has a really, really free version of it. As the free version, it's only antvirus however, if you take the paying variant, you get a firewall and a bunch of extra stuff along with it, but the AVG antivirus is free and without a time limit (I've been using it for a long time now)

This would most likely violate the terms of service of the programs, so no, you can't do this, you actually have to pay for them.

Great list Bob! Just 1 suggestion for the anti-malware/on-demand list and a few for more for free software.

Also, Spybot S&D is something I install on every computer I'm asked to touch, because its immunization feature is second to none in blacklisting known malicious sites and locking down IE. It's every bit of good as Malwarebytes and it's FREE!!

You should add Opera. Opera is quite safe in its handling of scripts so you don't have to deal with NoScript... plus it's made of win. ^^

Some other free programs I really like that I don't see on there ...

K-Lite codec pack (now DirectShow can play anything! There are lots of Windows bits that plug into directshow... now it can play on WMP, MPC, ZoomPlayer, anything!)
FreeKapture: A nice easy-to-use UI for scanning things that works with any WIA or TWAIN driver. ^_^
ImgBurn: The only tool you will ever need to burn and make copies of DVDs/CDs
Foxit Reader: Blazing fast PDF viewer... no more waiting for adobe to load and/or watching it crash!

I'll definitely keep an on eye this, sometimes it's hard to keep track of all the best tools available.

Wise man or fool?
I'm using google chrome for my browser, and I find it's very good. It crashes occasionally, but has an excellent automatic recovery that makes it seem like the crash never happened.
