The Legion Returns: A New World of Warcraft Expansion on the Horizon

In August 2015, players of Blizzard's long standing MMO, World of Warcraft, were treated with the announcement that the game's next big expansion is just around the corner. Such news is often reserved for the company's large scale convention, Blizzcon, held nearly every year in Anaheim, California. With the announcement has come excitement, worry, and hopefulness from fans all over the internet. What content will this new title bring to the game? Will it be bigger and better than the last? How many players will return after departing the game for other sources of entertainment?

Legion will be the sixth installment in a series of expansions to the original game. Over the course of many years, fans have seen the world and major lore figures alike grow and evolve. All the while, players have also grown, both in skill and in power within the game.

At this time, the expansion has no known release date. Interviews have revealed that the game has been in development for quite some time, yet no one has said when it will be available for play. One might assume that a demo version will be presented at Blizzcon in November, but that has yet to be seen.

Despite all the unknowns that have come with the announcement, there is some information to be had on the topic of World of Warcraft: Legion.

Among the most exciting of topics for players thus far is the revelation of a new Hero Class. The Demon Hunter, a class that has been in demand since the very first expansion was released, will finally be available for play. Blizzard has released a collection of images, as well as a decent amount of basic information regarding this new role. The class will start at level 98, a mere two levels below the current cap, to allow players to immediately join in new content. The characters must be elves, will use glaives for weapons, and will be leather wearing fighters with no healing specialization available. Thus far, the models are truly unique. At long last players will be able to sport wings, horns, and some awesome looking tattoos. The class will have access to a double jump ability, as well as metamorphosis.

In Legion, characters will have the novel experience of receiving a weapon unique not only to their class, but also specialization. Artifact weapons, which thus far appear to be weapons players have seen used by major lore figures in the past, will be accessible by the characters they play every day. At this time, 36 different weapons are planned. A paladin who plays the role of a tank will receive a different weapon than one who acts as a healer, providing a unique feel. It appears that there will be quests early on to acquire a character's weapon, and it will grow with them as they level and obtain stronger gear. Variations in individual weapon models have made an appearance, and it appears as if the weapons will have statistics and skill trees of their own.

To further build on classes and what makes each one different, Class Orders will be introduced in the new expansion. There will be a special area for each class, be it priest, warlock, or monk, to gather with others of their chosen path. Where the Warlords of Draenor expansion seemed to focus on leading an army, Legion appears to have chosen a feeling of unity in its place. Interestingly, it appears that Order Halls, the gathering places for players of a specific class, will not be faction specific. Alliance and Horde alike will gather in one special area.

In addition to these new features, players will see news that has come in the past. Once again classes will be revised, and some characters will not play as they used to. Six new areas will be introduced for exploration and adventure, and a city players knew and loved in Wrath of the Lich King will make an appearance. The level cap will be raised from 100 to 110, and a set of nine new dungeons and two new raids will set the stage for end game content. PvP has not been forgotten, and will also be seeing changes with the new title.

While many players seem to be looking forward to Legion, some are skeptical. It seems that Warlords of Draenor saw an awful lot of fans lose interest and drift to other games. A few of those still playing regularly voice displeasure and concern about the state of World of Warcraft on the forums, and also in the communication channels in-game. Will Legion bring the changes that they seek, and provide enough curiosity to bring players back, as well as enough engagement to keep them hooked? Only time will tell.

Excellent Article!

I've been playing a lot of WoW recently and would have procured some cash to pay for a subscription but considering how many people are leaving WoW... I'm afraid it would be a waste.
