If I am interested in joining WN for game X, why the hell would I care what is going on (or not) in forum Z? As if I'm going to scroll through the forum to see what is going on everywhere. I just want to make sure the game I am joining for is active - and it probably is, otherwise I wouldn't have considered joining. The only potential interesting forums to see clanwide activity (the Community Discussion forum) is not even open for Guests to see.
I understand we want to start fresh when we have our new forums but I'm afraid kicking out a bunch of sections will cost us even more members.
Oh, I think we'll absolutely lose some members from closing down some of the dead/dying sections. But I believe the intention is to also clean up and organize as a whole. WN holds sections and their leaders to certain standards. Granted the criteria they're held to changes frequently but generally speaking, decent to bare minimum activity is required. Some sections have long past being stale & are around for purely nostalgia reasons. I'm not knocking nostalgia as a invalid reason to hold onto a section either. I think history and looking back at awesome times is totally worth giving a section a breather. Not to treat it like some section that no one ever cared about.
But after a certain point, do the few that hang around really care that much anymore? I mean, they care in the sense that they like having a spot to remember the good times when they can. But they don't care enough (or have the time) to go recruit, start events, jump in-game, chat, etc.
I suspect the hope is that the love for the greater WN community trumps the love for the section nostalgia. That some of the members will want to stick around and hopefully join up with another section. Giving that new section a small boost in veteran members.
Also I'm guessing if this new site actually comes (I'm not convinced it will) it might be best to go forward fresh. Do the dirty work here so if the new site is up and [insert inactive section] is gone people won't be confused or hurt they didn't make it to the new site.
