Preview: Dragonshard
Dragonshard

Platform: PC (maybe Mac? Not sure)
Genre: Some mixture of RTS and RPG... WC3 style, but more RPGish
Date of Release: It's unclear, I think it's 9/1/2005, but then that's subject to change, too.
ESRB: Site says "T" for Teen, Gamestop says "E" for Everyone, and the trailer says, "RP" for Rating Pending, luckily, no one likes ESRB anyways. Still, if I know those cheeky chaps, they'll make it tough for the little kids, who seem to be the majority of the population of D&D players since they're the only ones with the time to play the damn game (D&D), to buy it, so count on Teen or Mature (13+ and 17+ respectively).
Publisher: Atari
Developer: Liquid Entertainment

One Line Summary (35/40, 87.5%, B+): Basically a D&D RTS game, just picture Warcraft III with more heroes and different characters (and better graphics).

Game Information

Story (10/10): Well, if you've played D&D, you'll know the routine. You level up your heroes, except in this, you get a lot of underlings to build your army, then you go head to head with a computer or other people. There's some sort of Lore on the site, mostly about the main heroes right now, looks good. It's based off the "brand new" Eberron campaign from D&D, so expect some good storyline

"To survive, the Umbragen drew on the dark power of the Shadow Flame, a force that has become deeply ingrained in their culture. A renewed war with the denizens of the underworld has, once again, made the Umbragen desperate for power… an evil power necessary for the race to continue."

Good stuff... but then, I'm a D&D fan.

Graphics (9/10): After watching the trailer, I can confidently say that these graphics are awesome. They've incorporated fully detailed RPG graphics into a RTS game, in my experience, this would cause considerable lag, but when this game is released in 4 months (assuming that my 9/1/2005 date is correct and that they meet it), hopefully everyone will have a GeForce 6 and it won't be an issue. Hopefully. You can watch and/or download the videos here:

Sound and Music (9/10): Well, the only information I have on this is what I've heard from the trailer, and that's rather difficult to make much out because there's a guy narrating the entire thing. Regardless, I was able to hear enough to make me happy. We've got the typical things you'd expect from an RTS, all kinds of battle sounds, swords clashing, hammers bashing, etc. Also, I heard a horse neighing, the sound of the horses as they ran... and when a very large ogre type creature died, there was a very realistic crashing sound as his knees hit the ground, then a louder one as the rest of his body went down. I'm not one to care much for sounds, I turn them off and run winamp in the background, but it does sound quite good so far.

Game Play/Control: You actually have to pay to enter the Beta, $50 at that, so I won't be able to actually play the game for awhile yet, if it all before release, but the controls on almost any RTS are pretty universal, you just need to learn the hotkeys for your race. I'm assuming this isn't much different. I can't say anything for sure, but I'm betting it will be fine. I'm not going to give this section a score though

Multi-Player (7/10): It does support mutliplayer, you can play versus the computers or against other players, plus you can team up with other players and fight... I'm not sure how many players are allowed in a game, with graphics like this I'd expect that anything more than 4 would be a killer even for a GeForce 6 or x800 line card (6800 Ultra and x850XTPE excluded). Still, don't quote me on this. Go check out a bookstore for the latest Eberron campaign booklet and see how many players it recommends (I'll probably do so soon).

Videos are in the top left corner, those little boxes... click on them, find the trailer and DL it, it's only 12.2MBs, so a 56ker will only need an hour. The gameplay video is a damn .mov >.<

In Closing

Well, as I said, I'm a D&D fan, so my opinion (and consequently, my rating) of this game is bound to be very positive, perhaps even more so than it deserves... but this game does look good, the screenshots alone say that much. I can't wait to play it and see how good it actually is

I agree, which is probably why I mentioned WarCraft III every other sentence... it looks a lot like it.

Why? oh why someone made an RTS out from D&D, i see this as a pathetic thing, the whole fun in D&D is that you have full control on your chars...that maximum reach 8 but taking care of an army...thats going to be sad, I am playing D&D for around 10 years now. and making an RTS out from it will cause nothing but staining the good name of the D&D...if there is such a thing.

Most non-geeks tend to regard D&D as a very sad game as it is, and true nerds are certainly not going to base their opinion off of the quality of one game. No, even if this game turns out badly, it won't hurt the reputation D&D has. On the other hand, if it turns out good, it could help. At worst, we break even, at best, the game gains some popularity. No worries here.

Besides, while it doesn't necessarily follow usual D&D play... it does look good.

Sure, just as soon as I convince my parents to buy me another game (problem being that they think (and rightly so) that I spend too much time playing games as it is).

I don't anticipate that happening without quite a big of begging, so it may be a little while... until I can find a friend with a credit card, in any case.

I heard about it a while ago, much too cartoonish looking...

I don't think I'll be giving it much of a glance if any at all, Neverwinter Nights is the ultimate D&D multiplayers if there is one. little else even comes close, and the incorporated Forgoten Realms stuff is dead on! you want a good D&D game... check that out. this might turn out good but I won't be finding out.
