For all you Korean MMO haters, get ready to change your pants when you see this new game heading our way.

(hit "continue reading" at the bottom so you can watch the videos I've inserted)

NCsoft, the same company that made City of Heroes, Guild Wars, Tabula Rasa, and Lineage, have released a new game in Korea. The game is currently shattering Open Beta records in Korea; a huge accomplishment. This game is coming to the US and Europe in 2009.

"The response we're seeing in Korea is incredibly exciting," said David Reid, president of publishing for NCsoft West in Seattle. "Our Aion community in North America and Europe is also rapidly growing. We've got aggressive plans for the western launch in 2009".
Aion is a western style MMO. It features the usual classes. Warrior, Mage, Scout, Priest. Each of these 4 class split into 2 subclasses.
Warrior: Templar or Gladiator
Mage: Sorcerer or Spiritmaster
Scout: Assassin or Ranger
Priest: Cleric or Chanter

What makes this different from the thousands of other MMOs?
Well, other than being graphically spectacular, the skill animation is superb. A new aspect introduced in this is mid-air combat. Players gain the ability to fly, the style/color of their wings shows their faction (black vs white). They can battle while flying. At the core, all MMOs are the same, they feature the same things. It's the tweaks and how they handle that make games better than their counterparts. Watch the videos for yourself to see how Aion stands out.

Cost?
Right now it will probably be a free download with a subscription fee. Expect the same prices as games like WoW and Warhammer for the monthly fee. The downsides is boo, have to pay money. The upside is this will break the streak of shit-Korean MMOs that have terrible support and cash shops that ruin game balance. Dealing with cash shops is a complete pain and in games with subscription fees, you have less bots and more support. So there's pluses and minuses.

Release date?
2009. Nothing more specific has been given, but it's already out in Beta in Korea. So the game exists, we're just waiting for our version.

Usually, at least for me, the graphics never make a huge difference (just throwing that out there, being a WoW player and all). I'm somewhat interested by the ability to fly, given a set of wings. I do get tired of seeing all these flying mounts in different games and yet no player has every been able to simply have a set of wings of their own.

Gameplay makes all the difference to me. If it plays smoothly, and doesn't require a bunch of pain in the ass combo-fighting, I'll bite at some point.
